19th century Native American images command a lot of collector interest.
This posting features a 19th century image of the famous Chief Sitting Bull. Images of Native Americans involved in Little Big Horn are very desirable.
The original image was taken by Goff and published by Zimmerman in 1881.
Full information at the bottom of card: "The Sioux Chief in command at the Custer Massacre" to include his Indian name "Ta-ton-ka-I-yo-ton-ka".
Nice Cabinet Card..Nice find..Scott
Any idea when & where this was taken ?
It was photographed in 1881 in the Dakota Territory.

What's also interesting is that Zimmerman Bros. was a well known photographic supply house in St. Paul, MN.
Here is a Heritage Auction listing from a few years ago:

'81 is when he turned himself in. He never looked happy, but in this pic, he looks resigned to me.
Thanks nicefice, vetraio and redware!

I know Sitting Bull sold his photo on a Cowboy/Indian Show Tour and he sat behind a table on which the photos were laid out. It is said folks, even grown men were afraid to go up and place their coin on the table. But I believe your photo may pre-date the the ones sold some 10 years later-- I am not sure EXACTLY when Sitting Bull was on those Wild West Show Tours,( for 2 different companies).I had written an article about this subject about 20 years ago. And my memory of it is fairly well faded, At the same time he was also selling a great piece of sheet music 11X14 with a vivid picture of him on its cover. I had one of those for the article. That is a great photo you have!
very interesting
