Erected in 1938 as The Comerford Theatre, this building had been abandoned for years. Fortunately, it has been resurrected as The Kirby Center. Located on Wilkes-Barré's Public Square, movies concerts, plays and other events are presented at The Kirby.
Fortunately, most of the building's Art-Deco design has been restored inside and out. A glaring exception is the non Art-Deco canopy, as seen in the first image.
The structure's tower from a shorter and telescopic view reflect its Art-Deco heritage.
I would like to receive permission to photograph the Kirby's interior, as the inside lavishly reflects the Art-Deco genre….
Saving, restoring and making such gems operative is commendable by all of those who are involved in this pursuit.
Thank you, Thomas…..
Great save what a beautiful building.
Hi, Caperkid….thanks for the love, and for the insightful comment. I always thought that it was a great building, and since I got into The Stagehands' Union (we set up shows there, and at other venues), I've gotten familiar with the inside of this theater. And as I've put forth in the description, I am looking forward to photographing the interior at some point….
Good afternoon, gc…thank you for the love!
Look forward to seeing the inside :)
Yes, Caperkid…the inside is magnificent….I hope to photograph it soon!

Love the architecture:)
Thanks, Trey,,,this is a beautiful building. I am a member of the Stagehands Union Local 82, and we set up and break down the shows at The Kirby Center. With this position, we can see the glorious Art-Deco interior of this great building.
They don't build venues such as this anymore.....
