I believe this dress clip is sterling with a gold vermeil from the early 1940's; the only marking on the back is the patent number for the clip (#US 1852188).

I was just looking up this patent the other day! It was granted in 1932 to Elisha A Phinney for Georeg H Fuller & Son Co. (they were in Rhode Island). I don't know if any other jewelry maker used the same clasp, a couple of online sellers claim Coro used them but no one provided any documentation to confirm that, so I would take that with a grain of salt.
Thank you davyd286, for the George H. Fuller & Son Co. name to look into! I was aware of the Phinney connection, however I did not know that he provided the patented clasp for them (in theory) exclusively. Filling in bits of history is a fascinating, yet sometimes frustrating effort! :-)
