Hello CW friends!
While I posted a set of rabbit toothpick holders, earlier today. It reminded me to post my antique rabbit and fowl match stick holder as well.
I've seen a lot of these over the years and there are many, many cheap reproductions of these available as well.
This one, however, is the real deal and still retains quite a bit of it's original paint. Some of these were patented in 1870. But, I believe this one was patented in 1867 (hoping someone might help me out on that). So, it's got some age to it. And considering how old it is, this one still looks really great.
This would have held match sticks and mounted on a wall in a kitchen next to the wood fired cook stove or next to a fireplace.
Thanks for stopping by and having a look. Always very sincerely appreciated!!
Scott
Thanks Thomas!! These are unique, but far from rare. Many of these can be found on eBay and flea markets today.

Oh wow very nice match stick holder that just suits you .Could've been in a hunt club some where. Awesome.
Roy,
Thanks! Yes, I'm more reminiscent of a hunt club than anything. Especially with stag at the top. Thanks for the comment and the love. Always glad to see you stop by Roy!
Yes. Looks like it belongs in a gentleman's hunting lodge. Interesting. May be common, but this is the first one I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
mareredware,
Thanks so much for the comment and love. Yes, the first thing that comes to mind is a hunting lodge. Though fairly common, there are quite a few cheap replicas and some very good replicas of these for sale on the web and flea markets. Though the replicas usually don't have the patent date on the backside and are of a rougher casting than the originals. Thanks again!!!
Thanks for the loves

That is one awesome match holder, I guess back in the day matches didn't stick around long enough to get damp ?

Thanks very much!! I'm guessing they used a lot of matches back in the day. Thanks for the comment and for stopping by. Always appreciated!!
Very nice. More ornate than most older ones. Most of the time they were just functional not fancy.
