Salesman sample gate patented by William R. White, of Bloomington, Illinois on July 3, 1900, patent #652,870. Dimensions are 24.5" x 9.5" x 12". The model makers label appears on the bottom. This model maker was a well known individual who produced many salesman models. This is the second model of a White swinging automatic gate in my collection. The earlier post is the rust colored gate. This was the culmination of a series of attempts to perfect the operating mechanism for his gates. This one operates very smoothly. This model came from St. Petersburg, FL.

You may have noticed the patent drawing says "no model" on the top left side. It means that no patent model was submitted with the application for patent. The patent model requirement was discontinued in the late 1880s.
    The patent model size limitations were 12" x 12" x 12".

Your whole collection is fascinating. Have to admit, I have trouble figuring out some of them & this is one of them.

      Thank You Nicefice.

Blunderbuss. The arms pull on a lever that unlatches the gate from the post and swings the gate open. Pulling the opposite arm closes and latches the gate. Photos are not very clear. The drawing shows the mechanism in more detail.

Drawing shows "bar" 27 (which appears to move horizontally ) attached to beam 20 (which moves vertically). Is #27 toggled on top of the top gate rail ? Ah ! Don't worry about it.

      Blunderbus,
27 connects the two arms together so the gate will open or close from either direction. It does toggle slightly. Rigid wouldn't allow the arms to move.
