Henry Likly and Co, square tri fold trunk. At least that's how I'm explaining it since I can't seem to find what it was called.
I found this out in a rural part of between Portland and Salem Oregon. I havn't had a lot of time for trunks but I had to pick it up, it's just to unique and I already have the Henry Likly dresser trunk so why the heck not.
It's got brass everywhere. The dust banding is 2 inches thick and covered in leather which is still mostly in tact. The corner posts are brass, I thought maybe brass coated but no they are solid brass. Leather handles still there.
It has initials on the side, J. C. S. F. CAL. Which adds to its charm. The inside needs a little attention or not maybe just a cleaning. It's not big the dimensions are 26 long, 22 wide, and 18 tall. It almost seems like when it's open it should be standing upright. I tried and it was perfectly level and straight, but I just don't know.
It has two cool labels, one is an Oregon luggage omnibus transfer and the other is for the Saint Paul hotel in Minnesota. in 1864 the Northern Pacific Railroad connected St. Paul Minnesota and Portland Oregon, I thought that was interesting. Since I found this very close to Portland. As I was connecting the dots I discovered Oregon was a major player in the coal industry, and through railways a lot of coal was exported to San Francisco Ca. Which is also on this trunk. Perhaps the owner of the trunk was in the business of coal?
Or just liked to travel in the utmost style of the time wherever the rail would go. I should write a short story, my mind is like a Jane Austen book when it comes to trunks!

      B.Kay,
What a magnificent trunk!! It's very reminiscent of a theatrical trunk. You did very well by acquiring this one. I do not own any Henry Likly trunks, but hope to add one to my collection one of these days. I love your write up! You should go ahead and continue your story. Most excellent!!

Thank you Scott! These Likly trunks are tough and solid for their time, so much detail in each one. And I just may write a story!

Great find, I think I would try my hand at some" liquid leather repair" on this one.
I like the size. And yeah, write a story why not have fun with it.

Thank you, I didn't need another one but it is really neat. I've been using for crafts. If you open it all the way, you can stand it upon one of the ends and it creates a bookshelf. It's very cool.
