This piece is about 28" long assembled. The pipe bowl is china with a metal top that snaps up and down. The china portion is attached to the wooden stem by khaki colored strings. The bowl reads:

and lovely handpainted roses below it and the American flag in blue and white stripes with red stars on one side and the Czech flag on the other side.
I asked my Mom if she recalled this piece and she didn't but when I mentioned Dad's unit she rattled off his info like it was yesterday. She will be 100 in November .
This would have been during the occupation. A large portion of the Czechs supported the Nazis as the lesser of 2 evils in the fight against the Communists, along with many other countries.

By the way, by "the occupation", I meant by the Allies.
