I inherited this beautiful vase from my mother in law. I know nothing about its history, date, design or origin. If anyone can add anything to bring it to life I would appreciate it.

Unusual, interesting and beautiful!!!
It certainly is impressive! I will see if I can find anything on the mark on the side
Possibly Inoue Ryosai?

I don’t see the lozenge tile with the makers mark on this one though. You could also go to gotherborg.com. He is well read on Asian pottery, and does do appraisals for a small fee
maryh1956,
what is a lozenge tile? You made a comment on a piece of mine and I dont know much about any of this...So please explain to me.
it don,t known what it is , but i have seen this on on bonhams, so it must be good
Sumida Gawa type of clay pottery, with small figures, and a partial glaze flowing from the top rim. Very nice.
Hello realize very old post,Your vase is definitely made by Inoue Ryosai, his signature is on the tile (lozenge) .
It is a very nice quality example,I would say quite valuable if no damage.
he was know along with Koko Ishiguro, who worked with him ,as the Fathers of Sumida Gawa ware.
hard to say this is an extension , we need the book Herbert Karp and Gardner Pond
associated with Ishiguro Koko maybe, there are an lot of deviations
i dont see this as idiosyncratic Inoue Ryosai , i am not sure
you are right i am wrong , its an deviation
