THIS IS AN UPDATE TO A POST OF A FOREST SIGN
It was listed as a Mystery - which has now been solved thanks to the tremendous assistance of several persons from the U.S. Forest Service.
This sign was manufactured some time between 1905 and 1920.
This dating procedure is based on changes made to the Forest Services Shield - in 1920 and again in 1938l.
Per their e-mail -
I reached out to couple of people and the best we could come up with is that your sign dates from 1905-1920. The shape of the Forest Service shield changed slightly in 1920 and 1938 (attached are images of the three different shields). You can see the difference in the shape of the letters “US” on either side of the tree. (The tree shape changed slightly as well).
There were a number of manufacturers of the signs and many of these sat around in storage for ever before making it out into the forest so it’s really impossible to figure out where exactly these were made.
But on the bright side, you have a great example of an early Forest Service sign!
I hope collectors of Forest Service signs find this information helpful
