A friend had this domed chest stored in her garage. It is 19" high by 19" deep by 32" long. Made of what appears to be spruce or pine (not a hardwood) and a dark canvas outer skin. The metal is riveted on and there is large brown striped paper lining the inside. The bottom has a metal plate (maybe tin) and small wheels. I realize it is in rough shape but hope to restore it with as little replacement of parts or wood as possible. Any idea on the age, where it is from and how to go about restoring it or recommendations on a site to visit for restoration.

    Thank you - Lois

Style shape and construction would suggest that this trunk was made in Europe, most likely England most likely early 1900's. Tell tale signs would be the metal handles and those small metal corner interior brackets meant to hold an interior shelf. You could strip off the canvas to reveal the nice pine body or give it a good cleaning and refinish the wood slats.

Thank you for the very quick response. England makes sense since my friend's family are from England. Is there a recommendation for a cleaning product to use on it? I would like to keep the burlap and just need something to remove years of grime and some mold.

Warm water with mild soap and a clean cloth will help -- I use Howard Beeswax & Orange Wood conditioner on my canvas and wood -- helps shine it up a bit.
