    This had been sitting in one of the local pawn shops for donkey's years. Today, I was finally intrigued enough to buy it. Stamped 925 and Italy. I love the color of the glass cabochon. In the third photo the skyline, as seen from my driveway, is upside down. I know why images appear upside down with optical glass/magnifiers, but I've never had a piece of jewelry with that property!

    Thanks for looking at my weird ring.

      Judy - I haven't the foggiest. The "stone" is 100% clear and has no scratches at all. I automatically thought glass because it was made in Italy.

      It might have something to do with the glass being convex for the top of the ring(which you can see in the pictures) and flat or concave on the back??? just a guess....not that it really matters lol.....it is beautiful....and I am just being curious!!!

      Judy - yes, you are right about the convex aspect. It's flat on the back. I still wonder if it's glass or a gemstone.

      The skyline is upside down because the material is in the shape of a simple lens.
    8. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 8 years ago
      rneiderman - does that mean the "stone" is glass? I've not heard of that happening with a clear cabochon gemstone.

      :-))))

      @vintagelamp - that's a gorgeous candy apple red !

      Any clear material that transmits light, i.e. quartz, flourite and even water drops, can be a lens. I've owned polished cabochon shaped amethyst and moonstone gemstones that behaved like lenses. Look at your stone under a loupe to see if there are inclusions. It's a great red color but more than likely glass. The setting is nice too. - Rob

      rniederman - I think it's glass. I haven't found any inclusions, so far.
