    Hello fellow collectors!!!

I acquired this early 1800's leather covered round trunk six or eight weeks ago. Back in the very early 1800's, this style of trunk was a very popular design. Many were hair on hide covered and few still exists. It was also common practice to add the owners' initials on the top with brass tacks.

This one is in really very pristine condition and I'm guessing that it has been restored many years ago. However, I've had this sitting in my garage with the lid open to air it out. Though most of the trunks I acquire have that old antique smell inside. This one was pretty extreme. I ended up wiping it out with a damp cloth soaked in bleach water. That seemed to take care of the odor issue.

I was able to get this one for an extremely great price. It's just a wonderful addition to my growing trunk collection. Looking more and more like I'm going to need to build on an addition to my home to display my trunks and top hats!!

Thanks very much for stopping by and supporting my posts!!

      Pops,
Thanks!! Yes, this was a very popular style of trunk during the early 1800's period. This was the first one I'd ever seen up close and in person. I've seen photos of this style dating back as far as 1810. That one was hair on hide covered though. Proud to add this one to my collection!

I never have seen one that old in anywhere near that condition (well pictures only) -- I would surmise that the leather at some point has been replaced and whoever did it did a great job of it -- what a fabulous piece! I have yet to come across one so kudos to you and your "fab" collection...

The round trunk is something I have never seen too. Back then travel was either by horse or sail. Probably not a lot a travel then thus not many trunks.
    23. jscott0363 jscott0363, 8 years ago
      fortapache,
You're right about the travel back in those days. Like you, I'm guessing that most travel was done by horse or horse drawn vehicles. As I've said earlier, I had only seen these in photos until I stumbled across this one and bought it before it slipped away. Thanks for the comment, the appreciation and for stopping by. Always very much appreciated!!!

    40. jscott0363 jscott0363, 8 years ago
      Drill,
Most definitely!!! Since I've read that leather trunk and bag history, it puts a whole new perspective on this one. Though I know this one has newer leather covering, it's pretty fascinating knowing that it was hand made in a saddle shop. Thanks again friend!!
