Aquired from a thrift shop this 18th Century ? Seaman's chest was reportedly donated from a home built in 1792. It looks very old . Any insight or information would be appreciated. Thanks to all! Betty

Completely gorgeous piece -- it certainly appears as old as early 1800's or earlier. Looks like rose-head hand made nails on the front lock so that helps date it a bit. May be a "fleur-de-lis" on the front latch which could indicate a French history. You can see its missing some original medallions around the front latch piece.
Thank you so much trunkman! Hoping for a descendent to come forward and claim ownership. Lol . First ambassador to the Netherlands? Scottish crest on front? The medallions you mention are a real mystery! Would love to know what they looked liked! Thanks for the love!
Welcome to CW!!
Betty,
That is absolutely stunning!!! I totally concur with trunkman on this one. This is rare trunk for sure! Welcome to CW!!
Not sure on this-- the carved trim around the piece looks odd.
Also can you add some pictures of the back side of the front plate/ lock to see how it is attached. Also a photo of the hinges/ handles from the inside to see how they look where they are attached.
Thanks.

Thanks again to Scott, Trey, Trunkman , Jscotto for the feed back!
Could be a seaman's chest but it isn't a trunk. Chests are made as furniture and the base is a furniture base. Furniture that sits on carpet. Trunks have rounded bases. I think I know what Scott is thinking here.
Gorgeous piece, whatever it is. Fantastic purchase and welcome to CW :)
Thank you fortApache and Melig for your comments and love!
