A new addition to the bugs hoard...
This one had some lacking tesserae, but beeing in its original domed case and beautifully mounted in etruscan style gold (unmarked)...
I had to have it :-D
5/8" or 1.7cm motif length,
3" or 7.5cm whole pin.
The case wears on the inside silk, in an oval stamp in gold, the retailer's name and address:
BENZIE 61 HIGH STREET, COWES around a crown.
Kyratisation: a tiny patch of white polymer clay, incised and baked, then some ashes to blacken the incisions.
BENZIE is still a well known jeweller, established at the same address on the island of Wight since 1862 :-)
Welcome to Benzie of Cowes

They are still in business. Benzie registration number is stamped on each piece that weighs over 4 grams. Empty boxes are also found online. I doubt they made micro mosaic jewelry, and gold left unmarked.......Suspicious attribution, anyway.
Ivan, thank you for your interest and input :-)
Collecting stick pins since 40 years, and gathering empty period boxes I can tell it is VERY difficult to match early ones !
This one is really fitted for the piece (length, thickness and no previous marks on the velvet under the head of the pin.
I'm sure Benzie didn't made the piece! At this time, jewellers retailed items they didn't made themselves, as micromosaics coming exclusively from Italy.
Oh BUG!!! I love it.
Many thanks to all of you, early lovers: Thomas, Sean, Lee120275, TheGateKeeper and Bonnie :-)
