    Hello CW friends!!

Just finished cleaning this one. The closest we can come to dating this one is the early to mid 1800's. It's patent leather covered and has many Jenny Lind style brass buttons. It also has hand made wrought iron handles, which I really love. This one still has it's original key and the lock operates beautifully! Based on the lock and trunk design, I'm pretty sure that this trunk is European made, and more than likely English made.

I cleaned a tremendous amount of dirt off this one (thank goodness for Magic Eraser Pads). Polished the brass, gave it a good application of mink oil and a good buffing. That was all this one needed. Well made trunks, like this one, always seem to hold up well.

Part of the leather dust band has crumbled away, but the remainder of the trunk is in pretty nice overall condition. There are two travel decals still intact. One from The Grand Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan and the other from Hotel Grand Central London. The decals, especially the one from Taiwan, tell me that this trunk was still being traveled with into the 1950's and well traveled at that.

Check out the Lillian Grubb photo inside the lid. It says "Compliments of George A. Hatch Apothecary, Laconia, N.H.

Thanks for stopping to have a look!

    Scott

I also use the "magic eraser" pads to clean up leather knife sheaths. Works like magic! LOL. [;>)

      Kyra,
Thanks, but I really didn't have to do much of anything here but give it a good cleaning. Mother nature preserved this well made trunk for us. Thanks for the lovely comment, the love and for stopping in. Always truly appreciated!!!!

A fabulous find JS -- in such pristine condition for its age -- do you use magic eraser on the leather?? I would think 1820's to 40's... such a high quality lock mechanism -- and I would think perhaps made in England as a guess. Triple bonus points for the key....
    14. jscott0363 jscott0363, 8 years ago
      trunkman,
Thanks very much!! I too placed the lock as English made. They key is even beautifully made. I only use the Magic Erasers on leather when it's a heavy leather. They do work like magic:)
Thanks very much for the info, the wonderful comment and the appreciation. Always greatly appreciated!!!!
