Can anyone tell me what this symbol is associated with?
I think it might have to do with some type of university degree like engineering, etc.
    Just a guess, really.

Just wanted to thank "surfdub66" for his answer, I hope this is where I do thank him.
From what I just looked up quickly, the Masons are some type of fraternity.
I believe this was my grandfathers, so very interesting to know.
      Thanks again.

Pretty much all of the free mason stuff has the compass and square. I doubt this is masonic.

Maybe the Army Corps of Engineers. The 13th Engineers Battalion has a very similar insignia on its crest (but a different number of rays).
The rising sun is indicative of the spirit of the Corps of Engineers, promptness, an early start. The number of rays, thirteen, alternating heat and light, represents the unit, the 13th Engineers. The upraised arm, clasping in the hand the blacksmith's hammer, denotes accomplishment in the manual arts, necessary in all engineering work. The 13th Engineers is organized as a General Service Regiment.
