I just acquired this trunk from a relative's estate It is very large, very heavy, and very intriguing. I haven't found any thing to identify it or its origin. I believe it was purchased at an auction. I don't have measurements at this time, but, I'm 5'4" and 135 lbs, and 4 of me could fit in this trunk with room to spare. Any info on it and references of who can appraise it would be greatly appreciated.

Beautiful trunk -- looks like an English Blanket chest with iron trim -- could be made around the 1850's or thereabouts. Look to see what type of nails it is made with or take a close up of a nail head and post it.

Thank you for you comment. I will do that as well as take some other views of the trunk including the inside. Just now home from work so after I get done sleep.

Thanks for the additional pics... looks like a rose-head nail which would indicate the nail was handmade which would date this prior to 1850...

trunkman, I don't think that's a rose head nail in the sense of a hand made nail. I think that is where the hinge post/rod comes through the wood, was heated and pounded flat to hold the hinge. I don't see any dovetailing on the corners either. Would like to see a close up of the nails in the top banding, not sure but they look round and smooth not hand made. Appears to be an immigrant trunk to me, the box inside was called a candle box. would like to see more pictures of the hardware , corners and top nails please.

Hey thanks for the pictures, still kind of hard to see must be cellphone pictures. It looks like handmade rose head nails, not sure if the handles are 100% handmade, strange to me that as old as it appears that the corners aren't hand cut dovetail joints. I thought that was the standard of that time maybe not.

I'll have to get more pictures soon... I've been sleeping and these are all I have right now... And yes, cell phone pics, sorry... I was in a hurry when I took those...

That's fine don't worry about it, I think you have a very nice trunk/chest and would be worth refinishing .
