This is an interesting little snuff bottle and I'm not sure of the age but I just tapped it on my teeth to see if I could tell if it was made of glass, porcelain or stone because it's got weight to it. To my surprise, I believe the outside is lacquer or some sort of plastic OVER glass or stone. I just read here on CW that the Japanese prefer the lacquer snuff bottles, sorry I didn't copy the link.

This has a raised enamel design that's different to me, the birds here have fish scales instead of feathers & under one of the birds the painting depicts a tigers paw. This reminds me of the Phoenix dragon, which represents more than one meaning or animal. I hope someone here can explain this and it's meaning.

On the other side is a dragonfly, often representative of the animal totem to bring healing to the owner. Loving that.

AND the top has got coral, jadeite and cannetille flowers & made of silver! Makers mark or hallmark is on the bottom in red ink.

I just remembered the site Gotheborg so am going there to see what I can find.

Any info would be great! Enjoy!

I ended up on another site with lots of different snuff bottles. I don't think this top or "cap" as I have now seen it referred to, belongs to this bottle. I didn't realize this and will add a pic with the cap on. Is it supposed to have cork on it?

Gorgeous. The birds are mandarin ducks, and yeah, their feathers almost look like scales.
Why not ask Cshapiro to have a look? She has great snuff bottle knowledge,

Awesome Karen, thanks! About 6 yrs ago I felt like the dragonfly became my animal totem and ever since, I get so many around me. I'm glad I found this one, but like I said, I don't think this is the original top but it's ok. Thanks for the link. Too much info everywhere, got me so confused!

Hi shareurpassion! Your bottle is made of white milk glass and painted with enamel. The mark on the bottom means "Ku Yueh Hsuan" or translated "Old Moon Pavillion."
This link is an example of what I believe to be an original - and you can see from it's $26,000 price tag that a lot of other people thought so too:
      http://www.skinnerinc.com/auctions/2406/lots/184

Because the bottles are so desirable, there were a lot of reproductions made from the 1970s until now.
Yours probably falls into that group. It's a nice hand painted reproduction of the Old Moon Pavilion style. ;)
I have a similar one that features water buffalos - I will try to post it soon.
      Hope that helps!

cshapiro, that one is beautiful but 26k??? Wow. I didn't get my hopes up with this one, although I did see some for a lot of $ that had nothing on top at all. I imagine the original bottle this top went to was really pretty and old too. This top is much too small and had tape to hold it on but I didn't know. Thanks for the info. It does help a lot and I won't have to keep looking!
