I've collected and worked on trunks for over 40 years now and I can say that I've seen very few similar to this, which have the fiber (0r vulcanized fiber) covering on a trunk from the 1880's to 90's. The fiber covering became very popular from the 1920's to 1940's, but some of it was used on earlier trunks. I decided to clean and restore the finish on this fiber covered barrel top trunk and I liked how it turned out. Based on the hardware and lock, I would say the trunk is from the mid 1880's. The brass Corbin lock is one of the nicest I've ever seen. The interior tray is a bit unusual also and has a folding compartment on the front which has a long parasol compartment below it. The original linen lining was preserved in the lid as well as the envelope pocket for papers.
The trunk is extremely heavy and strong and about 36 inches wide. Thanks for looking.

      Marvin,
You've done a stunning job, as always. I didn't know they used that type of covering during that period either. The finished product is just beautiful! That is the most incredible lock I've ever seen. Well done my friend!

Very beautiful Marvin -- I do not think I have seen a restoration of vulcanized fiber looking so good as this. That lock is over the top gorgeous. The total look is fabulous! I may prevail upon you regarding how you transformed the fiber if I come across one that merits re-doing, which as you know most don't.

Jscott, I appreciate the comments! yes, it's a beautiful lock and I wish I had a few more of those!
Trunkman, Thanks very much for your kind comments too. I was fortunate that this fiber covering was not painted and didn't have a lot of old finish on it and was still in complete condition.
Myoldkyhome.. thanks very much for your comments also. I appreciate them.

Very unique, hardware on the lid corners as well as the casters or bottom corners.
Any patents or thoughts on a maker Marvin?
    11. TrunkerMarvin TrunkerMarvin, 8 years ago
Thanks Drill, yes, it has some very nice hardware including the rotating casters which were patented in the late 1870's and used by several trunk makers in the upper Midwest and others. No label so I'm really not sure about the maker, but think it may have come from the Midwest area. It sure would be nice if all these great trunks had original makers labels!
