Hello fellow collectors!!
Here are just a few of the tintype photos from the post civil war era photo album that I just posted. There are several children photos in this one, and these are the highlights of those.
There are more photos that I'll post when I get more time.

Your first two images may be Civil War era.
I am not sure if you noticed, but the first is a "hidden mother" image. If you look closely-- you can see a hand is protruding from the chair back. Mom looks to be crouching behind the chair to calm the child. Also, there may be another hand holding the child's hand near the chair post. I cannot tell for certain (could just be movement from the child), but it really looks to be another hand reaching across the chair top.
These hidden mother images are an eagerly collected genre of antique images.

Fantastic album Scot, the quality of the book itself is great, and the photos wonderful.
Would this family have been wealthy? To have a special tooled leather book made, and all these photos could not have been a normal family thing surely?

The girl photos make me smile. We talk today about dressing little girls in smaller versions of adult clothes and then I see these little honeys. Hair all styled, dresses pintucked and shoulders bared. The boy has reason to be glum - that outfit lol! It was ok until Mum picked the socks.....

Wow, I had actually never looked that closely at the first pic, but you're absolutely right. Good eye!! Wonderful information on the photos and I was hoping you'd see these and let me know a bit more about them. Thanks so very much! This album and photos came from an estate of a family in upstate New York. Judging by the types of clothing that the folks in the photos are wearing, I'll assume this was a wealthy family indeed. The child in the last pic does in fact look very unhappy:)

To answer racer's question about the wealth of the family. These albums are very typical of the era. Albums with slots for 40- 50 images were not that expensive and allowed the family to safely store and share photos with visitors.
Leather coverings/ binding was readily available and wouldn't have commanded a huge premium.
There are larger albums that I would classify as EXPENSIVE and an indication of wealth-- albums that held four cdvs per page and totaled 200 images. These larger albums are certainly outside of the normal and an indication that the owner had more disposable income than was typical of the times.

I think roy has it on the last image-- looks like a boy. Boys in dresser is common-- I have seen a lot in 19th century images.

After studying that photo closely, I have come to the conclusion that this is a photo of a little girl. With the dress, the socks and the girly boots, it has to be a girl. Could be wrong about that though:)

I'm going to go with your conclusion on this. Now that I think of it, all the little girls seemed to keep their hair longer. Pretty cool!
Yep, the short hair and side part does it for me. I have seen girls with cropped hair but not as short as this.
