    Hello fellow collectors!!!

This would be the oldest trunk in my collection. It's a leather covered document box made by Howell & Son Trunk Makers N.Y. This document box is signed and dated by "C. Howell 1805" in the lower corner of the trunk label. A trunk, or document box, signed by the maker is something I've never seen before.

It's covered in leather and still in remarkable condition for its' age. It's also lined with newspaper dated September 1797. The leather covering is 100% intact and most of the brass tacks are remaining as is 90% of the leather trim around the edges.

It's small and only measures 10" long, 6" wide and 6" tall. I'm not really crazy about the decorative painting on this one, but to have a 211 year old item in this condition is simply fascinating to me.

Hope you enjoy seeing this as much as I do and thanks to all for stopping in to have a look!!!

    Scott

I can only hope that I'm in as good a condition at merely half its age, when I'm 105! [;>)))

Js this is such a wonderful piece! Amazing to see such a old signed label -- and for it to be in such great condition. Fabulous fine lock on it too. The "homestyle" decoration on it suggests a sense of character from an early owner, a personal creative touch -- shows me somebody real owned it. This hits all my "collectors buttons" -- verifiably old, unique, in pristine condition and personalized by both the maker and the owner. Just great to see -- thanks so much for bringing these pieces into the light for us all to appreciate.

What a great trunk, I have newspapers from this period, but no cool document boxes.

      very interesting indeed

They spelled "public" as we spell it, but in my 1807 American magazine they spelled it as "publick".

      Judy,
Thanks so very much!! I'm proud to have it as part of my collection!

      NevadaBlades,
I seriously doubt that I'll even be around at the 105 mark. If I am, I do hope I'm still in pretty goo shape:)

      trunkman,
This one just jumped out at me and immediately caught my eye. Never seen a trunk signed by the maker until this one. I too love the personalization and the very cool lock! Thanks so much for all your kind comments. Like you, and others on CW, I too have quite passion for collecting the wonderful little remnants of our history and truly enjoy sharing with others.

      rockbat,
This is actually the oldest newspaper that I've ever seen. I thought it was pretty cool myself.

      Thomas,
Thanks!! I'm very pleased to be the new owner of this one. I can only try and imagine what the original owner was like and what his occupation was.

      kivatinitz,
Thanks very much!! It is definitely interesting indeed. I do love interesting items.

      SpiritBear,
I noticed that the typeset they used for the newspaper had what appears to be an "f" in place of an "s".

Something made in 1805 is usually just seen in a museum. That's why I like antique stores. Instead of looking at something in a glass case you can own it.

      fortapache,
I totally agree!! Ironically, I have this one in a glass case on display in my home:) Thanks very much for the fine comment!!
