Hello fellow collectors!!!
I just purchased this leather covered document box from a fellow picker for a really incredible price. It was made sometime during the mid to late 1800's, just not exactly sure when. I was amazed when I saw it. The leather covering is 100% intact and even the leather dust band around the lip of the trunk is 100% intact and still quite supple. So, to find one of these old leather covered document boxes in this condition is always a real treat!!
The lock hasp is missing, but the keyhole cover is still in place, which is most always broken off or missing altogether. Lots of decorative brass tacks as you can see, which was very common to these old leather document boxes. Though there is a leather handle in place, someone at one time or another, has replaced or repaired that handle. The interior has been stripped out long ago, or perhaps it was never lined. There are two leather securing straps inside the lid, but I'm not sure if they are original to this box.
All this one needed was a good cleaning, conditioning and polishing.
I am very happy to add this nice document box to my collection. I do hope you all like it as well.
Thanks to all for stopping and having a look!!!
Scott

So glad to see this Js.. answered my question about the top handle… wasn’t sure if mine was original but I see from yours they made them like this !! This one is exact as mine — as seen in how handles are attached which I would surmise means the same maker.
Ok so not exactly the same lol… upon second look, yours has a different array of tacking… similar in concept shall we say.
Thanks T-man!!
I love the color of the leather on yours much better than mine. I love document boxes, especially the leather covered ones.
