A few weeks ago, beyemvey posted a beautiful twist vase in a decor I had never seen before - an iridescent smokey glass with a molded reverse thumbprint texture (image 4). As things often go in glass, a short time later a good glass friend of mine gave me an example of the decor in a trade (image 3). And then, just this week, I was able to add another example to my collection in the form of a ruffled sweet pea vase (images 1 & 2). In over 15 years of collecting Bohemian glass, I had never seen this decor before, but now have seen three in just a few weeks! :)

Anyway, I find these vases hard to photograph; they all have the same warm smokey colored base glass, with an iridescence that is very colorful, but hard to capture. The seller was kind enough to let me use his photos of the sweet pea vase for this post. The shapes are all quite simple, and rely on the play of light on the molded pattern and the iridescence.

I really have no idea who could have made these at this point, aside from their being definitely Bohemian, and probably dating from about 1900-1920. Personally, I think they are quite different from Rindskopf reverse thumbprint patterns that I own; their thumb print patterns are more oval in shape, the finishes on the smokey vases are much smoother (silky) than I have seen in Rindskopf, and the shapes just don't seem quite right for their work. Kralik comes to mind, but I have never seen this molding or color of glass used by them before. So, any thoughts on these is much appreciated!

There's so much to love in these, Michelle. However what stands out for me is the subtlety of the colours of the glass......such fine backgrounds for iridescence!

As with the others, I find this decor so attractive Michelle! If your photos didn't capture the iridescence, I can imagine how beautiful it must look in person! I love pic 2 :-)

Hi Rick, thank you! What I love about these is the play of light - the molded pattern sends the light in all directions, so I agree, they are fascinating to see in person. :)

Thank you, inky - you are so kind. This is a fun decor, and I am going to be on the look out for other pieces so hopefully one day I can find out who the maker was! :)
