This is an old trunk I kept from my grandfather's stuff from Melbourne Australia. It still has remnants of canvas covering on it although the leather straps and canvas are mostly rotted away. I would like to know something about it if anyone knows. It is in pretty poor condition and I wonder whether restoration effort is worth it.

Great old flat top packing trunk!! Based on the latches and hardware, this would be from the late 1800's to very early 1900's. It is American made. As far as restoration, I have found these in this condition, or worse, and was still able to restore. In fact, I found one several years ago that was in just this condition and I was able to restore it (click the link below to see the one I restored). The restoration took a few weeks, but turned out nicely. Great post and thanks very much for sharing!

Many thanks for your feedback. This trunk must have found its way from the USA to Australia where we live. Nice to imagine the story behind it. Great resto job on your trunk.

This one's metal parts are rustier. How do you clean the rust off metal?

And a few gouges to the wood when your hand slips but hey -- we can all attest - it's worth it!
