I thought this was much too nice to leave in the shop, so.....!

Bought new, this lacquerware is somewhat pricey:

    "Yamanaka Shikki" (Yamanaka Lacquerware)

"Yamanaka shikki is the lacquerware craft of Yamanaka Hot Spring, Kaga city, Ishikawa prefecture. The origin of this craft is around the 16th century, when a group of craftsmen moved to the area of Yamanaka Hot Spring. The skills of these craftsmen, with years of experience and good materials eventually created the foundation of wood carving and wood lathing techniques in the area. Yamanaka lacquerware is produced by specialists who are experts in their field. Divisions, such as wood cutting, carving and lathing still exist in the same town. These specialized skills are passed down for generations and contribute to the high quality of traditional lacquerware made in Yamanaka today."

    Thanks for stopping!

bill - it does look new. I have no clue how to date these - maybe something to do with the label design.
