My son in law found this in the fireplace. He just purchased the home and this was inside. Can anyone tell me what this is and what it is used for? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The handle appears to just have a hook on the end & makes me wonder if it is a part of this ?

The hook might not be part of the unit. The hook apparently was used to pull the unit in and out of the fireplace. My son in law tells me that the insert has something that is like a fire brick and it was made in Taiwan. Thanks for your input!

If I had to guess, I would say this was heated in the fireplace and then either slid into or sat down into a heatproof device used for heating, along the lines of a footwarmer box perhaps. Years ago when I worked in Tokyo (not Taiwan, but I have a point) and mentioned taking a hibachi to an event to cook up some dinner, I was asked why on earth I'd want to take a foot warmer/heating device when it was warm out. Lol. Ok, so I didn't know hibachis weren't originally meant to be cooked on, but I did learn that there are many kinds of heating boxes that hot coals or something like this would be put in. I would try googling Taiwanese heating devices or antique/vintage heating boxes to see if anything make sense.

Sorry, I meant a fireproof device not a heatproof device.
