Yes that's right, I got 4 old, and some rare, knives for seven dollars, at the Flea on Saturday! :^) Maybe not in top condition, but a little cleaning, brought um back, to some nice finds.
From left to right, top to bottom.
First is an old 3 folding blade pocket knife, CHALLANGE * CUTL. CO. * BRIDGEPORT * CONN. it says in 4 lines on the very used and sharpened main 2 1/2" blade. The C at the beginning and the E at the end of Challenge are oversized and extend to the line below, where Cutl. Co. fit between. On the secondary used and sharpened, 1 7/8" blade, that's on the same end as the main blade, it is marked the same. At the other end is a 1 7/8" scratch/leather punch that is unmarked, and in great shape. The knife has a staghorn look 3 5/8" case/handle, and all blades are tight with good snap. The Challenge Cutlery Company was formed in 1905 in Bridgeport Conn., and by 1928 no longer existed. So it's antique or close to!
Next is a KINGSTON * USA it says in 2 lines on the main 2 3/4" blade, of the 3 folding blades, faux tortoise shell 3 3/4" case/handle pocket knife. The secondary 2 1/8" blade is on the same end, with a 1 3/4" scratch/punch on the other end of the knife. Kingston USA was Trademarked by Devine & Ulster from 1915 to 1958, but this knife was probably made after 1946.
It's a nice knife with little use, it's tight with good snap.
The third knife is an advertising 2 folding blade pocket knife, for ELDRIDGE CO-OPERATIVE CO. * 1909 ELDRIDGE, IOWA 1939 it says in 2 lines on one side of the faux mother-of-peril 3 3/8" knife case/handle, on the other side it says, "CO-OPERATION CUTS COSTS" * GRAIN-COAL-FEED-SEEDS, ETC. in 2 lines. Both blades are on the same end, the main blade is 2 1/2" and is marked BRIT-NIFE * ST. LOUIS * U.S.A. in 3 lines. The secondary blade is 1 7/8". Both blades are like new, but the faux m.o.p. plastic is warped, and has some red stains on the first side. I searched this knife but found really no other info. except the company may have originated in Britten, in the late 1800's.
The last knife is almost new and apparently rare, but I think only because what it is. The KUTMASTER * UTICA, N.Y. * MADE IN USA it's marked in 3 lines on the main 1 7/8" blade, the other, on the same end of the 2 folding blade pocket knife, is a hooked blade, used in sheep castration, or similar animals. The case is marked STAINLESS HANDLE, and is 3 1/2" long. Kutmaster had it's 100th anniversary in 2010, and is a division of Utica Cutlery Company.
really nice knives. ive not been to the flea market in a few weeks... been working an average of 12 hrs a night on my truck route. haven't gotten home early enough to go. ive got 5 days off starting tomorrow.. hopefully ill get out there this week end, but I seriously doubt imma find this kinda deal. congrats !
Thanks whyatt, that Challenge Knife is a little rough, but with it's age, it was well used, but still a good knife, but the Kingston cleaned up nicely, I like that one a lot. All of them were a great buy for the price. A lot of people passed them up, because of the way they looked, and were in a case, but I look past the rust, and dirt to what the knife is, then ask how much, and sometimes I get surprised with a good price. With a little elbow grease, and some 000 steel wool, topped off with some WD40, I've found that I can make almost anything look better! :^D LOL
