This is a nice little Art Pottery Wall Pocket that I got at the Flea Market this past summer for $1.00.
It's a Circus Elephant Head on an Artist's Palette with a dark blue glaze. On the back it's pressed marked in a circle, Stockton California , with what looks like 3 or 4 letters in the middle, at 9 12 3 and maybe 6 but I can't quite make them out using a jewelers loop.
The Palette is 6" by 4 1/8" and the Elephant is 3 1/2" from top of head piece to bottom of curved trunk, which hangs 1/2" below the bottom of the Palette, and is 2 1/2 " wide from ear to ear. The Elephants head piece hangs low with a tassel down to the top of it's trunk, and no tusks.
I only found one reference and that was Stockton Art Pottery in the late 1800's to early 1900's, and not sure if this is the same company, but was located in Stockton California and pieces are very rare.
I really like this little wall pocket, and hope someone might know more about it.

      Amazing find!
According to marks4antiques, Stockton Pottery were only in business from 1895-1902. The piece is stunning and the colours so bright even after all that time!

I found more information on this piece, it's called Rekston Art Pottery Stockton, California. Rekston is a combination Stockton and Terra Cotta, the original company Stockton Terra Cotta that was established in 1891 made drain, sewer pipe, and other terra-cotta ware, and in 1897 started making art pottery, and used the Rekston mark under the Stockton California in a circle mark at that time. The company had a fire in 1902 and never rebuilt. The mark on this piece, has just the Stockton California with in a circle, missing the Rekston mark under it, by mistake, or made before the new name was added. Possibly making this piece even more rare! :^)

Hey Ken(Broochman), I don't know if you just brought this Post back up, or saw it because someone else did, but I'm glad it showed again because I really love this little Elephant Match Holder, and I guess I've missed a few of the loves given, so much Thanks to everyone that stopped by for a look, and loved what you saw! It's appreciated, and loved also! :^)
