Homer and Jethro sang about "The Old Baseball Hotel...where there's a pitcher on the table and the catcher is under the bed." My bet is this was a fancier place to keep the catcher.

      well that is interesting?

The "catcher" being that china basin that was used when indoor plumbing was either inconvenient or unavailable.

Show it open. Use all four pics. It's a toilet chair.

Commonly known as a commode chair....:-)

I wouldn't be so quick to call this a commode.

The style is similar to other hall pieces that I have seen with a storage box underneath.

Agree with celiene-- a picture of it open would be useful. IF it has a circular cut out, I too would think commode; otherwise, I believe what we have is a storage chair.

scottvez is right on. It is the lower half of a entry way hall tree. They usually have a mirror with coat hooks surrounding it. When you come in from the weather you could take off your hat and coat and hang them on the hooks and then sit down and take off your boots and place them under the seat. Some times they had a unbrella stand that would attach to the side, a hoop at the top and a drip pan at the bottom. There is two possibilities with your bench. One, yours may have been two pieces with the mirror hang on the wall above it. Or it may have been cut down when the ornate, fancy oak furniture went out of style Try googleing Antique Hall Tree Images , and you might understand what I am reffering too.
