Hello CW friends!!
I came across this old Irish made wicker trunk a few weeks back. I've always wanted one for my collection and since it was priced very inexpensively, I went ahead and bought it. A decent wicker trunk, that's able to be restored, is a fairly rare find these days as very few of these survived over the years. Many that I've seen are too far past the point of restoration. This one was able to be cleaned and properly repaired.
I've been working on this one since I got it and let me tell you it's been a real challenge. It's taken a tremendous amount of cleaning, refabricating replacement leather parts and lots and lots of restitching. But, I'm nearly complete and will be posting the finished product soon.
This style of trunk is made of willow wicker and is encased in a heavy patent leather type covering with leather binding. It's the first wicker trunk I've actually seen with wood slats on the top and also the first Irish made trunk I've ever seen. It a fairly large trunk, measuring 32" long, 26" tall and 21" front to back.

Thanks Gary!! I'm half Irish myself. My grandfathers' family (Brady) all came from Ireland.

I really love that pic! My wicker trunk is progressing nicely so far. Had a lot of cleaning to do on it and had to make several replacement leather pieces and stitch them onto the trunk. Down to minor details as of now.
I steam cleaned the interior, but the beautiful striped lining has some old staining that just won't budge, even with oxy-clean and high pressure steam. Any suggestions?
That is indeed an interesting trunk. You are making better progress than I am I still haven't gotten out my Halloween decorations.

That's pretty cool! Your Irish Grandfather had quite a business going there, in the county of Cork. Perhaps this was one of his trunks. After all, I did buy this from a nice lady in Belfast:)
