This Waltham wristwatch was made in 1937. The case is very art deco in style featuring an elongated hexagonal step-sided case. It reminds me a bit of the Chrysler Building in NYC :-) The dial face is white with gold numerals and black tick marks. It features a sub-dial second hand. The strap is some form of reptile skin (alligator, snake, lizard?) and may even be original. If it was ever marked, they have long since worn away, but the leather is perfect. The clasp shows moderate wear on the exposed surface indicating some age. It is nice to find a working unrestored example in excellent condition such as this.

The movement is only a 9 jewel movement, but I tested it and it kept perfect time for the 10 hours that I observed. The serial number on the movement determines the year of manufacture. The case is 10K rolled yellow gold plate. Best of all, it is environmentally friendly as it uses no batteries... pretty good for something about to turn 80 years old. I was thrilled when the owner accepted my conservative cash offer. I'm wearing it now and loving it!

Bulovas & Walthams are usually pretty easy to date due to existing serial number tables.
