The colors really clash, but the porcelain is really beautiful - the butterflies and colors are really special. no signature on the pottery, but the laquer box - which looks Japanese to me - has an old Gump's label. a bit of a mystery to me! what do you think? i found this at Goodwill today - good evening thrifting!

A nice quality piece! I think Gumps retailed asian items, as well as jewelry too.
Agree with you the box seems Japanese, but the dishes combo rather Chinese.

Yes! They gathered asian pieces and antiques porcelain to sell:

The only ones I found on the web are made by Chikaramachi, and those sets carry backstamps.

who is Chikaramachi? Gump's was at this location from 1910-1939, so i think we can say it was put together sometime between those dates. they sold antique Chinese stuff, and they were known for putting things together, so it may be from before then.

      Chikaramachi branch factory of Noritake

Chikaramachi, Made In Japan. In use on porcelain made at the Noritake factory, Chikaramachi branch, during 1928-1946. Mark occurs in black and red. Porcelain intended for the United Kingdom market uses "Foreign" instead of Made in Japan. Same factory also used a mark with a crown inside a wreath. After the Noritake Morimura Gumi period that ended 1946, the factory changed name to Hinode Shokai.

That is also the old logo. My guess, probably 1920's. PRE deco period.

"With the beginning of a new century, Solomon Gump handed over the reins to his son, Abraham Livingston. Soon thereafter, the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 forced A.L., as he was known, to rebuild and restock the store. He looked to the Far East for new inspiration, sending buyers to Japan and China to find exotic rugs, porcelain, silks, bronzes and jade."

thank you Efes and Celiene!! Efes - why do you think the porcelain is Japanese and not Chinese? i've never seen Japanese w/ this kind of design before.

Looking closer at the logo -its A Gump's. Abe Gump was president in 1918- through at least 1922 at 268 Post St.

Wow Celiene! great detective work! over on the fb chinese collectors site, they had never seen anything like these colors before and were telling me that this was the 2nd half of the 20th century and 'no way' 20s/30s. i disagreed w/ them completely. gosh they can be know-it-alls sometimes!

UNLESS someone got REALLY lucky and found the box that fits it, and these are married pieces!
    14. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 8 years ago
that could be, but i had the feeling when i first saw them that these are much older than they appear to be. and the wear is consistent with age.

wow! thanks rene! i was told by a couple people that they thought they were Japanese.
