This is the strangest "flower pot" I've seen to date. I thought at first it was the bottom half of something, but there is no edge on which to place a lid. Then I thought it was something to cook in, but there is no evidence of that ever having happened. Made of terracotta/earthenware, I think. Measures 9.5 inches across and stands 5 inches high.
Is it a garden piece? I dunno. Images searches didn't turn up anything.
Thanks to anyone who knows something!
I added a close up photo of the surface - maybe it helps.

P.S. I heard back from an archaeological museum in Nijmegen - nobody there knows what this is or how old it is. Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, so I thought I'd have a shot at finding out what this bowl is...but, nope! I emailed another Dutch archaeological website, so maybe they know something:

P.S.S. > I heard back from the archaeological museum in Utrecht. Nobody has a clue about my pot/bowl.

Just guessing !!! Bird bath, three legged censer or mortar dish? Or just an ornament? :)
    2. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 8 years ago

    3. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 8 years ago

    4. shareurpassion shareurpassion, 8 years ago

LOL shareurpassion! That is where I found it - among all the flower pots and vases. It look sooooo different from the rest that my inner voice hollered at me to buy it.

LOL@kyra! I also think it's old. I sent photos to two local museums here in Holland who have items made from earthenware. I hope somebody knows something!
    10. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 8 years ago
@kyra - the entire pot is filled with those colors. Do you think it's paint or just the color of the material used to make it?
    11. fleafinder fleafinder, 8 years ago
wah nice!guessing its a tips bowl!!!
    12. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
From the artisanal look of the entire piece, and don't think it is "studio" pottery, I think the colors are from deposits or oxydation of some kind...
Hope you'll get an id from the museums:-)
    13. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 8 years ago
fleafinded - yes, a tips bowl used in Roman times, lol! :<))))))) I sent photos to two local museums to ask if anyone knows how old it is and what it is.
