We were having thanksgiving dinner at my 94 year old great aunts house that has a museum full of antique's and collectibles. My cousins is the only smoker so she got a ashtray for him.The Amber one came out 1st and before one ash fell I jumped up like a lion protecting his Cubs and yelled !! STOP !!.How could abuse such a beautiful piece of glass for smoking.I grabbed it and asked my aunt to please get him another one.She went in to the garage and brought out the smaller green Viking ashtray.Again I leaped in to action and jumped across the coffee table and barely grabbed it in time before he could use it.I then asked took to see where she was getting these from and to my surprise because she never smoked there was a treasure trove of ashtrays that have never even been used tucked away in the garage.I got a box cutter out and cut the bottom of a 2 litter Diet Coke bottle out then put a little water in it and that was my cousins ashtray for the rest of the day. Here's 6 of over 40 ashtrays I saved from certain glass cancer to live another lifetime.I'll post the other ones later that are really unique and a lot older than these.
Terrific ashtrays and loved you story!!!!
Thanks TassieDevil, everyone in the family was so surprised she even had 1 ashtray because she never smoked and there's was at least 40.
Lol, a coke bottle with water does the trick every time!!!
Good for you, and ashtrays have become quite collectable now!!
This is a great website and if it had not been for all the nice people here who helped me with identifying different things when I first started trying to collect things I probably would have quit by now.My brother and I played ball and the only thing we ever collected was speeding and lottery tickets that never won. After she brought out all the ashtrays I showed him this website and he's now going to start looking for ashtrays at thrift stores and garage sales to start collecting.Aunt Essie is kind of forgetful (who wouldn't be at 94) and he's now wondering if she buried some gold and silver somewhere she forgot about and wants to see if there's such a thing as a silver and gold sniffing dog.
