This unknown Japanese porcelain vase I purchased in the summer of 2015, in Cincinnati. I have been researching Japanese artist signatures, but have not been able to determine the maker, or age of this piece.
It stands 9-7/8 inches tall. The diameter at the opening is 2 inches, and it is 6-1/2 inches diameter at it's widest.
It is hand painted with enameled flowers and branches. It's main colors are green and pink, on a heavily crazed light colored porcelain with an over-glaze.

A very nice vase I love the wasp among the flowers. I would say it is made by Kinkozan. Early Kinkozan ware Japanese style. early Meiji period 1868-1870's . could be late Edo but I do not think so. You should be able to find other examples online same type of decorations with insects or cranes among flowers. I have about 4-5 piece of Kinkozan ware in this type of decorations. More than likely not made for export not really made in the western taste at the time.More of the Japanese market. Also its earthen ware and not made of porcelain.. If it was porcelain it wouldn't have the crazing that you see and be the lite tan color which is due to a high iron content in the clay. But a very nice find at a yard sale. I would have grab it to if I seen it, but I collect oriental items.
Also if cleaning just a lite damp cloth. I mean very lite damp cloth if the piece gets to much water on it the iron can leach to the surface and stain it darker due to that the earthenware being porous also can darken due to high humidity or if someone smokes a lot around it can stain it.
the painting is really gorgeous on this piece! would it be considered Satsuma, grendel?

Glad I could help Ralph, I like helping if I can. Japanese pottery I have some knowledge on still learning, that why its important to get some good books on the subject if you plan to collect. Chinese pottery I have just started to collect some of that its harder to figure out due to the fact that a lot of its been copied and made to look old.
