My friends dad received this stein as a gift from a neighbor who went to Germany. This information is documented via a hand written note by my friends mother. He don't know exactly what year, but approximately late 1970's. After seeing other similar stein post here on CW we know it's a basic souvenir stein. But we would love to know an approx. age and if someone knows this ?maker mark? Assuming that's what the W or M mark is. I can't wait to learn more. I'm so impressed with all the knowledgeable and kind CW peeps! Thank you all so much!

Nice Stein Karen, and welcome to CW. Like you said, it's most likely a souvenir peace. The Bear and Crown is the coat of arms for Berlin. I wish I could be some help.

I think it was sold in West Berlin - based on the Bavarian scene. The East Germans wouldn't have put that on the stein:) Sorry I cannot help more!

Actually Rick, those are castillations. The bear is good for Berlin with or without castillations or crown.

      Should be circa the 1950s.

OMGosh, thanks for comments of any kind. Any thoughts at all give me searching clues. And I love this page! Thanks for the warm welcome!

Wow SpiritBear, we must have been writing about the same time. Thanks so much for all the comments! But I admit, an age was a huge target for me. My friend was under the impression that this was purchased new for his dad and I thought it looked older but I'm such a novice (at best) I was ONLY guessing. I think the irredecencent color is kinda considered " lusterware' but again, I'm not even sure that term applies to this item or a stein or if lusterware is made outside of Japan.
And I guessed it was a coat of arms, never occurred to me that it is the coat of arms for Berlin...duh!! And I will have to look up the term castillations, I noticed what I think is a crown made of a brick wall. I'm just so excited and thankful for the comments...Rick55, Freiheit, Blunderbuss2, and SpiritBear....Thank You All!
I can't wait to post some of my own junk. If I find something cheap and I don't know what it is, I buy it so I can research it. And this page will make research easier.
