Katherine Burnap "Kady" Faulkner, after receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Syracuse University, began in 1930 a twenty-year teaching career at University of Nebraska - Lincoln. She is perhaps best recognized for her "genre" style paintings (those 1930s era romanticized Americana views I call "Prairie Deco") and it was one of those that earned her a WPA commission. The post office in Valentine, Nebraska houses a mural completed by Faulkner in 1939.

This watercolor painting (16" x 20" on heavy illustration board) is untitled and somewhat atypical and moodier than what is usually seen of her work from this time. Dated 1937, it seems to reflect the influence of Hans Hofmann whom she had studied under four or five years earlier.

Wow! How beautiful for such an old age! How did you end up with it?

Thank you - I bought this years ago at an estate liquidation sale. I bought it because I thought it well done and I liked the colors. It was several years after that before I determined who the artist was. Just goes to show - when you're out there looking for "stuff" - trust your lust! If you like it and you can afford it - buy it! Even if it doesn't turn out to be a minor gem you will still enjoy living with it. I've added a picture of its current location in my front room.
