I would imagine that the leather top was a latter addition not original to the piece.
Thank you for commenting. It says Anno 1698 on the front. Do you think it could really be that old?
Well that would be pretty fantastic if it was -- we would need to see close up pictures of the joints, lock, interior, hardware etc. to be able to help in the dating. You could do another set of postings for those pics. It has the look of an older piece and would not be out of line with what was made in that time period. Better quality pictures would help in the process...
I agree with trunkman, seeing closeups of the hardware, tacks, joints, etc. would be great. Looks like a nice one!
I will be able to photograph it over the Christmas holiday and will post the photos at that time. Thanks for the feedback!
