This box is incredibly beautiful - much moreso than my photos convey. i think that the writing on it is cyrillic, so made in Russia? or Lithuania? there must be an interesting story behind a prince plucking a peacock, or something like that...? the box is 5.5" long by just under 2" tall. in perfect condition minus a few surface scratches on the bottom. i think there is a date there too - 1996.
why can't i ever find the box category?
Russian. Very pretty! I looked at a bunch of these in a second hand shop today.
The Firebird. (Famous Ballet,too!)

Lol ho2cultcha..
There is a writing on the edge of the lid, if you'd like to take a close up pic, i can translate. I can see 1976, i think. Yes, that's a scene from a Russian folk tale about a firebird ["Zhar-ptitsa"].
Thanks AnnaB! i just posted a closeup shot of the words.
It reads: "Fedoskino 1916 Bukalova" (to the best i could see).
Fedoskino is a small village near Moscow, now a historical and art center. "Fedoskino lacquer miniature" was founded by merchant Peter Korobov in 1795. He first started by making tobacco boxes, and later expanded manufacturing to jewelry and other types of boxes, Easter eggs, album covers, etc. They became very popular, and even recognized at international fairs/exhibits. Fedoskino Miniature is famous for its elaborate skillfully painted scenes from famous folk tales and peasant life. Some techniques use light-reflective materials (metallic powder, gold, silver, mother of pearl) underneath oil paint to create glowing effect. The studio is active today, and there's an art school there that teaches this technique. This art is very dear to many in Russia as it represents and preserves the soul of the simple people, their life style, culture and traditions that were wiped out after 1917.
Lovely box Ho2... I love the rich bold colors!
AnnaB - thank you for the excellent information!
wow! what amazing info AnnaB! and it does seem to fit. there is something like a MOP sheen to some of the figures. it is an amazing painting when you see it in person, but the photo just doesn't do it justice. thanks so much for the info!
thanks Rick!
with AnnaB's help, i was able to find this: http://www.russianlacquerart.com/cnt/Fedoskino/0000/006934/
My pleasure, ho2! There is a very interesting in-depth article about FM on russian wiki, which i can translate, but it would be toooo long for a post. I wanted to paste the link so you could copy the text and translate it via online translator, but because of russian letters it doesn't paste right on CW :-(
Thank you Celiene, i learned something new, too!
thank you AnnaB! i really love this little box, but what is really beautiful about it can only be seen in person - doesn't come out in the photos - it's a 3-dimensional effect with the use of mop in the paints.
