I know, there's a crack in the glass where somebody put a bit too much effort into tightening the screw. Still an interesting piece. I deleted two photos and will make new ones in the morning.
About the marks - not exactly the same marks as what's on my piece, but close enough for me to date it:
http://www.ascasonline.org/windowAGOST63.html
"Marked by the ostrich and two inscriptions "WMF" and "G" (Geislingen an der Steige) in a rhombus, placed in hatched rectangle. Note the special shape of the "F" letter. The rectangle size is 3.7 x 4.2 mm (or 3.7 x 4.4 mm).
The additional marks: "B" means Britannia metal, a zinc-antimony-copper alloy which served as a base metal for silver plating, "I/O" means normal silver coating which is equivalent to 1 gram of silver per 1 dm2 of base metal surface, "OX" means oxidized finish. This mark was in use from around 1900 until about 1918. "
Thank you to my friends for solving this "Mystery"!

For very precious processed cheese :-)))
Interesting find!
Perhaps from a desk set... with a wet sponge in it to dampen stamps ?
Cigarettes or trinkett box similar shape here:

description of the item in link above:
3 3/4" X 4 1/4" X 1 3/4" TALL. CLEARLY SIGNED WITH VARIOUS WMF MARKS. SIMILAR ITEMS SHOWN ON PAGE 122 OF THE 1906 WMF CATALOG. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION ON TOP OF LID.
I'm thinking that the rounded front would make it easy for a cigarette to come out when grabbed, rolling up and out.

Ah, my wise friends....I never thought about a cigarette box. I don't smoke and had the damn thing upside down.....

Mystery Solved!!!
Hello Efesgirl,I have a box like this that's not near as nice as yours made of brass.I got it with a bunch of old ashtrays and it had a small pair of tongs in it for taking tobacco out and rolling your own cigarettes.Very nice and unusual find.
jbingham95 - can you post it? Would like to see it. :-))))
