Unsure of the provenance of this beautiful hand-painted box. The motifs and style look Scandinavian to me.
I'm wondering if a fairytale is depicted. The man on horseback has a green face so I was thinking Green Knight (not necessarily of Arthurian legend but of the Danish fairytale.) Also, what is the pointy hat with the scalloped edge that the girl wears? She has a blonde braid, which leads me to believe the painting is perhaps of Scandinavian origin. However, the horse the man rides has three plumes on his head, which reminds me of the Prince of Wales' heraldic badge. Also, there are some rosemaling techniques employed in this painting but they're not overtly used.
Any ideas?

Lovely. Are the two little animals eating something together?
Thanks so much, Alan2310 and bananapeel. Bananapeel, it does indeed look like they're sharing something, right? It almost looks like spaghetti to me. My husband suggested maybe it's thread and they're making something.
Thank you, melaniej.
Oh, I like the thread idea that your husband had. ;)
I do as well, bananapeel. I just wish I knew if the painting told a traditional story, or if it was just one person's imagination and their own story.
