    Hi CW Gang:

I pick up *interesting* old Bibles when I find them - Why? Seems like so many people get rid of them and they are cheap. Bought this for .25 cents years ago and just figured it was unique. Because:

    ~ Real Leather cover
~ Gold gilt on the Edges
~ Notation in it of ( at least that is what it looks like )
    RE. ASHER, from N. RE.
~ Has something of a date in it of 24 . 4 : 12. So just wondering if it is?
~ Gold Gilt on Front Cover and on side Spine

So I grab these when I find them hoping I stumble on something old or Rare....LOL. I can not find a printed date anywhere in the book. I wonder if RE stands for Reverend or not in that note in the front of it ? Just a thought. This is a smaller bible like a Pocket book. Any help on it? Thanks

Thanks for LOOKING // LOVING !!

    ~ Rose ~

Hi Rose, love old prayer books, especially the small ones...
That date would be 1912 I reckon.......

      Rose,
I'd have to agree with Judy. Sure looks like 1912 to me as well. Very nice leather bound bible!

Rose, have a look and see if there is a page with moveable feasts.....that should give you a year date perhaps!

Is 24.4.12 a Psalm reading?? or something..... just guessing here

      Thanks for the comments.

I was wondering IF 24.4.12 a Psalm reading ? Or a Hymn too? So not sure if that is the date.

~ What are moveable Feasts ??

      http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/moveable-feast.html
This explains moveable feasts.......and I am thinking that if there is a page for these in the prayer book, it would stand to reason that they(the dates for the years) would be shown over a couple of years....and this would tell you the date of the prayer book.
If that makes any sense at all LOL!!!

oh...and IF that 24.4.12 is a date???????? Then it could be 1912....but could it be 1812 too? I do not know as how old it could be. Also I tried to bend the gold gilt page edges to see IF they make a picture - but atlas - No.....

If that IS the date, yeah 1912 would be the obvious, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to think outside the box

lol...Not sure what I am to look for -- Like a Calendar in it?

Rose, have a look at this one.........I think this is about as far as I can go with it now!

Oh that is Super !!! And all your hard work!! Thank you so much!! Now you got me hunting more too and with your help I found this one in the link below that seems to have the same inside info as mine but it has a fancier cover than mine....LOL. But is says there: [ Quoted for that item, but a different cover ]

"" Lovely old Book of Common Prayer, with ivorine or similar material front and back and spine with hallmarked sterling silver cross on front, truly beautiful! Title page is the Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church according to the use of The Church of England together with The Psalter or Psalms of David, printed in Oxford, the University Press, London: Henry Frowde, gold gilt over red tinted outer page edges, marker ribbon. The book is a nice personal size, measuring 4 & 5/8" tall by 3 & 1/4" wide by 1" thick and is in good condition, mild age signs, mild wear, binding strong, prior owner inscription on ffep dated 1912, but the table of movable feasts inside starts with 1899. We find the ivorine books occasionally, usually not in this nice condition and rarely with a fine sterling cross.""

So that one is also dated 1912 via a inscription there too, but the table of movable feasts inside starts with 1899 ---- So which date do you use ?

Also mine would NOT be as much as that one as the link one has a fancy cover, etc - mine is plain -- but I am still looking for one like this with the emblem on the front like mine and have not found one ...... Yet!!

Again Judy Thanks for all your work.....I have some other too ....LOL
    12. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
That's terrific Rose.... I would be inclined to use the 1899 date for dating the book....and the 1912 inscription for when the owner received the prayer book. I hope someone else will chime in if this is not right, and you are welcome Rose!
