I found this at a local thrift store in Virginia- It appears to be very old and well used although it has no tobacco odor only an old wood smell- it measures around 10" by 6". Perhaps it is an old humidor but never used as one? Does anyone have a clue?

Please help me identify this antique wood box.
First I thought it was a inkwell holder and pens. Its a very beautiful piece.
I seen ink holders in that arrange style where glass cups would fit the two end holds , what is puzzles me is material wood. Usally they are metal.
