SpiritBear
(813 items)
Today I found this in a THRIFT STORE of all places. I saw it from a short distance and thought, "It can't possibly be." I was expecting an alcohol advertisement, but it happens to be a tray from the year 1900 featuring William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt (presidential election winner and VP) and Liberty.
I picked it up to save it because the lithograph is bubbling off in big flakes. It's in such wretched shape that seems to have mostly occurred in recent years.
The issue is, I don't know what to use.
Whatever is used must be:
Acid-free
Colour safe (Non-Reactive)
Clear
Non-yellowing
Non-cracking
Removable with solvents
Able to seal it and hold down the flaking pieces.
Anyone for sure on what to use? Such an old piece of history deserves to be saved.
Very tough to say Spiritbear... handling is your worst enemy... maybe frame it in a shadow box? Perhaps try carefully removing one of the larger flakes & use a dab of white water soluble glue to re-attach it? see how that works, & if the results are good, repeat... I know... risky stuff. That is a great tray!
I'll see what glues I have that are acid-free to reattach some of the pieces. Sadly, we have many holes in the litho and I don't have the skill or paints to 'touch up' them.
Krylon Triple thick spray
Thank you for the comment. I'm not so sure about their triple thick, but their product Preserve It! may work,
No idea what to use however the images was used on pinback buttons for what that's worth
