Something I picked up for myself whilst shopping for gifts. I had to get up the hill quickly as it was supposed to snow (which it did). Wanted to check out some of the local shops before I went home and found a new shop. This shop was owned by someone who had booth in the mall I had just visited. I recognized this crab from his old booth. Turns out he lives up here.
Anyway he marked down the crab a bit as someone had broken off a leg when looking at it. It has since been glued on.
This is a diving crab or swimming crab. The rear legs have fins on them. Scientific name is Charybdis Natator. The leg span is 9" -10" wide.
The plan is to put him in a double glass sided display. Currently he sitting next to the peek a boo crab downstairs with the sea shells.
That's one pretty cool crab!! At first glance I thought he was a live crab until I read your story:)
agreed!!cool crab!
Not sure where you are, but your crab looks like what we here in Florida call a blue crab. But they turn red/pinkish after being cooked. These crabs are good eating, but time consuming. And the crab you have it placed next to, looks like what I know as a horseshoe crab. Cool crabs! Merry Christmas!
Thank you very much Scott. He is well preserved.
Thank you very much fleafinder.
Thank you very much Karenoke. I am on the west coast and according to Wikipedia he is from Indian and Pacific oceans.
I'll post a horseshoe crab eventually.
