This is the earliest I can find the book, The Banished Son and Other Stories of the Heart by Mrs. Caroline Lee Hentz, published by T. B. Peterson & Bros. circa 1852. All others have the 1856 (same year the author died) date and onward.
I'm wondering if it was registered in 1852 but not printed till 1856, in which they re-registered the same year-- I wonder it because the 1856 book's scan I looked at showed many similarities including image and poem, albeit it had far more of her other works listed.
I found this in another thrift store yesterday (same one I found the tray in).
The exterior shows minor wear, consisting of bumps, removable staining, and minor colour loss (likely from being throw into a book bin for donation and being put onto a few different shelves) but is totally intact beyond a fabric tear on a corner and a little crushing on the spine.
The interior, though, is what amazed me: it was still white and with negligible acid-spotting! Even the binding was still tight and fresh, like it had never been read. The pages are still crisp-cornered.
About a dollar fifty US alongside two Zane Grey first editions.
Gotta love thrift stores.
