Many years ago I was told that items made from brass, and that were marked China, Made in China, etc.were actually made from brass shell casings from WW II and the Korean Conflict. The hue of these items have a muted appearance when compared to many other objects made from brass in other parts of the world. Can anyone support, or debunk this? I am also curious as to the meaning of the characters in the attached picture. Can anyone tell what they stand for and if they are original to a specific period or recent reproductions of much older characters? Many thanks for any input that anyone may care to share.

Many thanks for your input. I suspect, by its condition, that this is a recent reproduction.

It is a small incense burner, the type that does not have a lid. It is in my booth at a local antique shop currently. Any thoughts on the scrap brass shell turned into China Brass objects story that I was told years ago?

It could possibly be an antique. Hopefully, someone else could chime in on this.
