heres an old Cattaraugus oval hole packing knife.
it advertises the oval hole packing material used to seal steam engine rods back in the day. the holes would wear in an oval shape over time. the oval hole packing material would seal the action.
ive read of 1 actually brought home by a war vet that dated 1943. ive seen similar Cattaraugus knife handles dating back to the 20s. im thinking it ww2 era as the story was definite in its read.
its not perfect, but a really nice for a knife for its age. no rust or pitting to speak of. the handle is unblemished. itd been sharpened of course, but was dulling . didn't take much on the soft oil stone to get it shaving sharp ! really tight and the leather looks fantastic. seen them in like conditions selling for 3 to 4 times what I paid at an indoor flea market this morning.... 15 bucks !
thought you might enjoy this 1, bill .
Great find, whyatt! I've seen a lot of the rubber-handled Catt kitchen knives but this is a new one on me. And the marked sheath! Sweet!
Nice one whyatt, always good to have the sheath, really adds to the value, and just looks GOOD too! :^) Nice buy!
thanks guys. yall know ive been collecting the old Solingen knives for the most part, but no way I was gonna pass on this 1.
