    An easy test for rubies to perform at home: a lab created ruby glows a bright red under black light /UV light. A natural ruby would have very weak glow. Gemologists say there exists one variety of ruby that also has a strong glow but it's so rare and expensive that the likelihood of us coming across it at a flea market is nil.

      Out of curiosity, when did labs start creating gems? Do you know. I would love to know.

      Sue, first lab created gems date from end 1800'. They must have the same physical propertied than genuine, chemical components have to be the same, only there is no impurities and a distinctive uniform aspect.
