Pretty porcelain, hand enamel painted. encased in brass which is showing heavy patina. On back under the dark shape there are the initials of the maker. The seller said she recalls it in the home as far back as the early to mid 1950s when she was a teen, but could have been in the home earlier. So I'll categorize it, "Mid-Century" as a collectible.
Great shape and with more color that my camera captured. I bought it for the odd water fowl. They are so sweet.(enlarge bowl) Now, I wonder what I can do with it, other than just "look at it"--I wouldn't want to scratch it--maybe small wrapped candies. Mostly because I have a lot of stuff, I buy things that are "functional"not just sitting around.
Ooops--I have now wiped away the smudge near the backmark. Why do I always see these things AFTER I put them on?

      Are those birds for real?

Now I see birds on porcelain items on here--which are the same bird! Must be a bird loved in Japan. Could be real or a fantasy fowl.
